Nandrolone decanoate is a synthetic androgen that has been shown to inhibit the production of HIV-1, the virus that causes AIDS. Nandrolone decanoate has also been shown to induce an antitumor response in mice. The drug binds to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and inhibits viral replication by inhibiting DNA synthesis. This inhibition is selective for reverse transcriptase and does not affect other enzymes in the cell. Nandrolone decanoate has been shown to act as a potent inhibitor of ryanodine receptor in cells and as an anti-inflammatory agent. It can also be used for the treatment of infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, or sepsis.
