Nembutal is the brand name for pentobarbital, a barbiturate that depresses the central nervous system. It was once prescribed to humans as a sedative, sleep aid, and anticonvulsant, but these uses have largely stopped due to its high risk of dependence, overdose, and fatal respiratory depression. Today, pentobarbital is mainly used in veterinary medicine for anesthesia and, in some countries, for animal euthanasia. In humans, misuse can cause extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing, coma, and death—especially when combined with alcohol or other depressants. Because of these dangers, Nembutal is strictly regulated or banned for routine human use in many regions.
